Center for Advanced Electrical Machines and Drives (CAEMD) was found by Professor Ronghai Qu in September 2011, which relies on Huazhong University of Science and Technology, the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Electromagnetic Engineering and Technology, and the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Advanced Motor Technology. With strong scientific research strength and advanced research experience, CAEMD aims to meet the technical needs of national and local machine enterprises. CAEMD focuses on the integration of high-end machine design, analysis, drive and control systems, and innovations from the perspective of topology and theory.

CAEMD focuses on the gathering and training of talents. It has a research team with a background in scientific research at home and abroad, as well as two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and two academicians of the American Academy of Engineering as consultants. In addition, there are 5 post-doctors, 4 assistants, 28doctoral students and 48 postgraduates. In recent years, CAEMD has graduated 28 students, including 21 graduate students, 7doctoral students, and 3 post-doctoral students. Two of the graduate students won the outstanding master / doctoral thesis awards in Hubei province, three of the graduate students were approved by the 2017 postdoctoral innovative talent support plan, four of the graduate students entered domestic universities as a teacher, and five went to well-known universities in the US, Germany, and Britain to continue their studies.

Based on the forefront of international science and technology, CAEMD actively organizes and participates in international academic exchange activities. Since its establishment, CAEMD has published more than 296 SCI / EI papers in machine-related fields, 4 papers won the best paper award in 17th & 20th International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems (ICEMS 2014 & 2017),International Conference on Electrical Machines (ICEM 2016), and IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE 2017). Besides, CAEMD applied for more than 100 invention / utility patents. In the past two years, more than 60 people have participated in international authoritative academic conferences, and more than 20 people have participated in the organization of international conferences. More than 20 famous experts have been invited to visit CAEMD. In May 2016, CAEMD successfully hosted the China-Korea Joint Sympo-sium on WeGAT. The Conference brought experts and scholars in the field of wind power together from more than ten well-known universities in China and South Korea, and conducted in-depth discussions on many hot issues such as wind power planning, wind turbine / wind farm commissioning and protection, wind power grid connection, and power market.

CAEMD attaches great importance to the achievement transformation. CAEMD is committed to becoming a world-class research center for electrical machines and systems and promoting machine technology progress and product upgrades in China. The research objects include various new types of machines and systems, such as flux modulation machines, electric vehicles and high-speed rail permanent magnetic traction machines, superconducting generators, permanent magnet wind turbines, high-speed synchronous machines, servo machines, low-speed super-torque machines, and linear machines, etc. Since its establishment, CAEMD has undertaken 25 national, provincial, and ministerial-lever major scientific research projects, including the National Science and Technology Support Plan (1), Major Science and Technology Projects (2), the 863 Plan (1), National Strong Foundation Engineering Project (1), 10 National Natural Science Foundation of China (including 1 "Key Project", 2 "Key International Cooperation Projects", 1 General Project, 6 Youth Projects), "Innovation Team" (1) of the Ministry of Education , Intelligent Manufacturing Comprehensive Standardization and New Model Application Project of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (1 item), National Key R & D Project (3 items), Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Major Project (1), Hubei Provincial Technology Support Plan (1) Special project (1 project), Post-doctoral innovation talent support plan (1 project), Youth talent entrustment project (1 project), etc. At the same time, CAEMD also carried out 25 technical researches and developments with a number of state-owned and private enterprises on robots, aviation, and other high-performance machines and drive systems. The "electric vehicle drive motor system" project won the "2013 China Industry-University-Research Cooperation Innovation Achievement Award". The “Key Technology and Application of flux Modulation Permanent Magnet Synchronous AC Servo Motor” project won the first prize of Hubei Province Science and Technology Progress in 2017. Relevant research results are continuously applied to wind power generation, electric vehicles, marine power, aviation propulsion, high-end CNC machine tools, high-speed rail traction, oil and gas and other industries, and are gradually creating good economic benefits for enterprises.

In order to strengthen the communication and cooperation between universities and enterprises in machine design and control, and to promote technological innovation and cooperation between industry, university and research institutes, CAEMD organized and held the "1st Academic Annual Meeting" in July 2015. Taking this meeting as an opportunity, a corporate alliance member system was established. Since then, annual academic conferences have been held for well-known domestic enterprises and research institutes in the electrical machinery industry. The theme of the annual scientific research results introduced in the form of theme reports and special reports and domestic and foreign well-known experts and guests are invited to discuss the cutting-edge technology of electrical engineering, which has been widely praised and strongly supported by the industry, especially the majority of motor and drive companies, with more than 100 participants each year.
