Relying on the solid scientific foundation and fine research environment of school of electrical and electronic engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), the Center for Advanced Electrical Machines & Drives (CAEMD) is officially established in September, 2011. This center is led by Professor Ronghai Qu, one distinguished expert employed by the China national “Recruitment Program of Global Experts” program, and it has also invited several academicians in motor fields as consultants.
Focusing on basic and applied research, CAEMD sets foot in the international frontier science and technology, aiming to gather and train high-level talents in machine researching fields and striving to become a competitive innovation research platform in machine design, drive and control technic fields.
The research areas of CAEMD include but not limit to novel special machines, such as novel permanent magnet machine, superconducting machine, aerospace machine and super high power density machine. It mainly includes topology innovation in machine structure, theoretical analysis and design, simulation and modeling, magnetic field analysis, motor drive and control, etc. The achievements of CAEMD are widely used in applications such as wind power generation, electric cars, high-end CNC machines, high power rail tractions (for example metro and high speed train) ,etc.
From 2011 until now, CAEMD has successfully introduced two talented young teachers working in our center. As to talents training, currently CAEMD has nine masters, eleven doctors, one post-doctor, one graduated post-doctor, six graduated post-graduate and in 2014, our center has newly enrolled thirteen post-graduates as well; As to infrastructure, CAEMD has successfully built three special motor test platforms and brought in a series of related equipment; As to international communication, it has invited well-known experts from all over the world, including T. A. Lipo, Thomas M. Jahns, Ziqiang Zhu, Zhengming Zhao and Ming Cheng to visit and give lectures. Furthermore, CAEMD also selects members and students to participate international leading conferences in the field of electrical machine and power electronics every year. Just in 2014, more than twenty papers from CAEMD have been accepted by famous international conferences of machine, superconducting and magnetic areas in North America, Europe and Asia.
Currently, the funding source of CAEMD mainly comes from the National Science and Technology Support Program, the National Science and Technology Major Project, the National High-tech Research and Development Program (863 Program) and so on. Meanwhile, it also maintains research cooperation relationship with several large and medium-sized state-owned and private enterprises. The research project titled “Electric vehicle drive motor system” in CAEMD has won the “2013 China IUR cooperative innovation achievement award”.
