Personal Profile





Bachelor and Master of Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University in 1993 and 1996. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2002. He used to be a teacher in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University, a senior R & D engineer at Scott Fitzer, and a senior professional engineer at the headquarters of the Global R & D Center of General Electric (GE). He joined Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2010 as a professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Electrical Engineering, and served as the dean of the School of Electrical Engineering from 2012 to 2016. Currently serves as a member of the school's degree evaluation committee, the chairman of the degree review committee of the School of Electrical Engineering, the deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Strong Electromagnetic Engineering and New Technology, the director of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Control Engineering, the director of the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for New Motors, and the director of Center for Advanced Electrical Machines&Drives.

Representative Achievement




He has many years of scientific research and product development experience in motor design, production, drive and control. Invented a variety of advanced permanent magnet and superconducting machine topologies to solve many key technical problems of large-scale special permanent magnet motors. Published more than 300 papers indexed by SCI and EI, including more than 100 papers indexed by SCI, 200 papers indexed by EI, 2 papers won the IEEE IAS Best Paper Award, 3 papers received the ICEMS Best Paper Award, and 1 paper received the ICEM Best Paper Awards, 1 paper won the ECCE Best Paper Award, 1 paper received the IEEE IAS Distinguished Paper Award, and 1 paper received the IEEE IPCC Outstanding Paper Award; authorized / applied more than 100 invention patents in the United States, Europe and China. While working at GE's Global R & D Center, he was engaged in the research and development of various high-speed, high-power, high-power-density permanent magnets, superconductors and other new motors. As the person in charge of motor technology, he chaired and participated in the completion of a number of advanced motor technology research and development projects supported by the US Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, and GE, with a total project funding of more than $ 30 million and he received 11 awards including technical achievement award, outstanding team award and management award within 8 years.

After returning to China, he is responsible for a number of major national, provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, including the National Science and Technology Support Plan, Major Science and Technology Projects, the "863" Plan, the National Strong Foundation Project, the National Natural Science Foundation, the Ministry of Education "Innovation Team", and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Intelligent manufacturing comprehensive standardization and new model application project, Hubei Province Science and Technology Major Project, Hubei Province Science and Technology Support Plan, Guangdong Province Science and Technology Major Project, etc. He also carried out scientific research cooperation with a number of state-owned and private enterprises on high-performance motors and drive systems. Relevant research results are continuously applied to wind power generation, electric vehicles, marine power, aviation propulsion, high-end CNC machine tools, high-speed rail traction, oil and gas and other industries, and are gradually creating good economic benefits for enterprises. The “Electric Vehicle Drive Motor System” project undertaken by him was awarded the 2013 China-Academy-Research Cooperation Innovation Achievement Award. The project “Key Technologies and Applications of Magnetic Field Modulated Permanent Magnet Synchronous AC Servo Motors” won the 2017 First Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress in Hubei Province.






Research Direction:

Motor design, drive and control. Research areas include: analysis and design of special motors, basic theory of new magnetic field modulation, magnetic field modulation permanent magnet motor systems, large permanent magnet wind turbines, superconducting motor applications, and high-power traction motor systems.

In recent years, the main research work includes: electric bus traction motors and drivers, high-speed permanent magnet traction motors, servo motor series product design, light electric vehicle drive motors, axial flux permanent magnet motors, wind turbines, high-efficiency industrial motors, linear Motor, etc.
