On December 9, 2019, Manoj Shah, professor of the Department Electrical, Computer and Systems Engineering (ECSE) of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute(RPI), was invited to visit our school by Professor Qu Ronghai of the Innovation Motor Technology Research Center. As a guest of series of lectures named "Joining with the electrical elite, and walking with the future", Professor Manoj made a lecture entitled "My ~ 34 year Technical Career at GE! Advanced Electrical Machines for Transportation" in the A518 room of the New Electrical Building.
Professor Manoj Shah has been the Chief Engineer of General Electric (GE) Global R & D Center for 34 years and has a very rich background in industrial product research and development. His lecture can be divided into two parts. First, Professor Manoj Shah combined his personal work experience at General Electric with the development and application of electric motors, then vividly introduced a variety of motors used in aviation, hydropower , oil , gas and transportation industries, with the operating temperature ranges from -230 ° C to > 300 ° C, the rated power from several kilowatts to more than 1GW, the speed from 10RPM to 30,000RPM, the voltage level from about 100V to 12kV. Then Professor Manoj Shah gave a focused explanation on the content of the projects he has participated in, which greatly inspired the graduate students present.
Professor Manoj Shah put forward some prospects for the development in the field. He combined his experience and the development trend of design requirements, proposed how to make progress in multiple fields and how to achieve this goal. Professor Manoj Shah believes that integration and communication are the future trends. Only through the joint contributions of various disciplines and the integration of various fields can more technological breakthroughs blossom and bear fruit.
After the lecture, Professor Manoj Shah gave detailed answers to questions asked by students, and then had a friendly discussion with Professor Qu Ronghai and the students present.
On the afternoon of the 9th, Professor Manoj Shah had academic exchanges with teachers and postdoctoral fellows of the CAEMD, and visited the central laboratory under the leadership of Professor Qu Ronghai. He expressed his high recognition and praise for the work done by the center, and looked forward to the substantial cooperation research between the two parties in the future.
