On August 15, 2019, four scholars including Senior Researchers David Gerada,Zeyuan Xu and Zhang Xiaochen from University of Nottingham visited our school at the invitation of CAEMD of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Dr. Gerada and Dr. Xu were guests of the "join hands with the electric elite, walk with the future" lecture series and the "motor high-end forum" of CAEMD. In the meeting room A220 of the new Electrical building, they gave two excellent presentations on "Propelling e-drive Technologies to Market Uptake" and "Thermal Mechanical Integrated Design of Electrical Machines for Future Transportations" respectively.
Dr. David Gerada led the design and development of a series of high-speed motors and successfully put them into use, established the technical indicators for their wide adoption, and greatly improved their technical reliability in the field of transportation applications. In the morning lecture, Dr. Gerada introduced the specific performance requirements of motor drive system in the application fields of rail transit, ship propulsion, aerospace and other fields from the perspective of technology maturity. On this basis, he described in detail a series of successful development cases of high power density motor system undertaken by PEMC group of the university of Nottingham, which deeply inspired students. The relevant cases have high practicability and are the model of cooperation between universities and aviation enterprises. At the end of the presentation, everyone actively asked questions, and David Gerada answered them in detail.
The speaker then was Dr. Zeyuan Xu, also an alumnus of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, who focused on the development of condensing devices for satellites, which had won the first prize in science and technology progress of the China space launch center and had been successfully used in satellites developed by the China space launch center. The topic of his lecture mainly includes the thermal management technology of power electronic devices and motors. Combined with practical engineering projects, he introduced the development process, thermal management and cooling technology of motors in detail, which benefited teachers and students a lot. After the lecture, students actively asked questions. Dr. Zeyuan Xu answered the questions one by one and had friendly discussions and exchanges with Professor Qu Ronghai and teacher Li Dawei. Finally, the visiting experts took a group photo with the teachers and students of CAEMD.
On the afternoon, led by two teachers, Kong Wubin and Li Dawei of CAEMD, experts from the university of Nottingham visited the laboratory of the center. They highly recognized and praised the work done by the center, and looked forward to carrying out substantial cooperative research between the two sides in the future.
