In 2005 and 2007, he obtained a bachelor's and master's degree in   electrical engineering from Tsinghua University.

In 2007, he went to the University of Virginia Tech Center for Power   Electronics Systems (CPES) to pursue his Ph.D., and transferred to the University of Tennessee in 2010 with his advisor. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee in the end of 2011. In January 2012, he joined the United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) as a senior research scientist and engineer.

In July 2015, he returned to China and joined the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology as a professor.

The main research direction: power electronics and motion control technology. Before March of 2019, more than 100 academic papers were published and accepted in this field, including more than 40 IEEE Transactions papers indexed by SCI. Received 30 US, European and Chinese patents and patent applications. Jiang Dong has served as the Associate Editor of the IEEE Transaction on Industry Applications since November 2015. In May 2016, he was elected to the Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He has received prize paper awards for IEEE journals and conferences many times. In 2018, he initialized the IEEE PELS Wuhan Chapter and served as the first executive chairman.
